Decorative Flake vs Metallic Epoxy: Which Finish Is Right for You?

The Prime Team · 19 July 2026

Decorative flake and metallic epoxy are both premium finishes, but they suit different jobs. Flake systems broadcast coloured vinyl chips into the coating, then lock them under a clear top coat. The result is a hard-wearing, slightly textured surface that hides minor imperfections, adds grip underfoot and comes in a wide range of colour blends. It's our go-to for garages, workshops and busy homes because it's forgiving and easy to maintain. Metallic epoxy is the showpiece option. Metallic pigments are moved through the wet coat to create a flowing, three-dimensional, marble-like effect, so no two floors look the same. It's stunning in showrooms, retail spaces, offices and luxury homes, but the smoother surface shows wear and scratches more readily in heavy-traffic areas. If you want durable and practical, choose flake. If you want a statement floor and will look after it, metallic is hard to beat. Not sure? We'll talk you through it on a free site visit.
