How to Clean and Maintain an Epoxy Floor

One of the real advantages of an epoxy floor is how little it asks of you. There is no sealing schedule, no polishing, no annual re-coat. That said, a few simple habits will keep it looking new considerably longer.

Everyday cleaning

Sweep or vacuum regularly. This matters more than it sounds: the main cause of a dulled epoxy floor is not dramatic damage but fine grit being walked and driven across the surface, acting like sandpaper over months.

For washing, warm water and a mild detergent on a soft mop is all that is needed. The surface is non-porous, so dirt sits on top rather than soaking in, and it lifts easily.

What to avoid

Skip anything harshly abrasive — steel wool, scouring pads, aggressive scrubbing discs. They will scratch the top coat, and the top coat is what protects everything beneath it.

Avoid strongly acidic cleaners, including some citrus-based products and vinegar solutions, which can dull the finish over time. Standard household detergents are fine.

Dealing with spills

Most spills can simply be wiped up whenever you notice them; that is the point of a sealed floor. Two things are worth prompt attention: aggressive chemicals such as brake fluid, battery acid and strong solvents, and anything left to pool for a long period. Neither will destroy a well-built floor immediately, but both are easier dealt with early.

Protecting against the things that do cause damage

Hot tyre pickup is the classic garage issue — tyres that have been on a hot road can grip a coating as they cool. A properly prepared and cured floor with a quality top coat resists this well, which is another reason preparation and cure times matter.

Put something under jack stands, engine hoists and anything with a small hard foot carrying heavy load, since point loads are far more punishing than spread weight. Avoid dragging sharp steel across the surface — lift, do not slide.

What good maintenance actually buys you

None of this is demanding. The realistic difference between a well-kept epoxy floor and a neglected one is not whether it fails, but whether it still looks like a new floor in year eight. Given that every one of our floors is backed by a 7-year workmanship warranty, it is worth the few minutes.
